DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH 

Direct speech

we may quote the actual words of the speaker. This method is called Direct speech. Indirec speech the original words of person are narrated and are enclosed in quotation mark (“).

For Example :

               Yupi said, “ I don’t like apple “ or “ I don’t like apple “, said Yupi

Indirect speech 

We may report what he said without quoting his exact words. This methoad is called indirect speech or repoted speech.

For Example :

·         Direct : Clinton said, “I am very busy now”

·         Indirect : Clinton said the he was very busy then 

Change in to :

a.       A simple present tenses becomes simple past tenses

Example :

·         Direct  : Adi said, “ I am unwell “

·         Indirect : Adi said that he was unwell

b.      A present continous tenses becomes a past continous

Example :

·         Direct :  He said, “ My mother is writing letter “

·         Indirect : He said that his mother  was writing  letter

c.       A present perfect becomes a past perfect

Example :

·         Direct : Vicky said, “ I have passed the examination

·         Indirect : Vicky said that he had passed the examination

d.      A future tenses becomes past future tenses

Example :

·         Direct : Jony had said that,”I will go overseas”

·         Indirect : Jony had said that he would go overseas

e.      A past continous becomes perfect continous

·         Direct : Ali said, “I was going to Jakarta every month”

·         Indirect : Ali said that he had was going to Jakarta every month

f.        A simple past becomes past perfect
Example :
                Direct : Neymar said, “I studied mathematics last night”
                Indirect : Neymar said that he had studied mathematics the previous night
